A clean car isn't just about aesthetics — it's about respect. Whether you're a SWIFT host preparing your vehicle for the next renter or a driver who wants to return a shared car in great condition, knowing how to properly clean a vehicle is an essential life skill.
Forget the $8 drive-through car wash. This guide walks you through a thorough, professional-quality clean that covers every surface, inside and out.
What You'll Need
Before you start, gather these supplies:
- Exterior: Two buckets, car wash soap (never dish soap), microfiber wash mitt, microfiber drying towels, wheel cleaner, tire shine, clay bar, spray wax
- Interior: Vacuum with attachments, all-purpose interior cleaner, glass cleaner, microfiber cloths, soft-bristle brush, leather conditioner (if applicable), air freshener
Step 1: The Exterior Wash
Start with the wheels — they're the dirtiest part. Spray wheel cleaner on each rim, let it sit for 60 seconds, then scrub with a dedicated wheel brush. Rinse thoroughly.
For the body, use the two-bucket method: one bucket with soapy water, one with clean rinse water. Dip your mitt in the soapy bucket, wash one panel at a time from top to bottom, then rinse the mitt in the clean bucket before reloading with soap. This prevents swirl marks caused by dragging dirt across the paint.
Rinse the entire car with a gentle stream of water (not a high-pressure jet) and dry immediately with a clean microfiber towel to prevent water spots.
Step 2: Clay Bar Treatment
After washing, run your hand across the paint. Feel rough spots? That's bonded contamination — brake dust, industrial fallout, tree sap. A clay bar removes it all. Spray clay lubricant on a small section, glide the clay bar back and forth with light pressure, and wipe clean. The paint should feel glass-smooth afterward.
Step 3: Interior Deep Clean
Remove all floor mats and shake them out. Vacuum every surface: seats, carpets, between seat cushions, door pockets, and the trunk. Use crevice attachments to reach between seats and along the center console.
Spray all-purpose cleaner on hard surfaces — dashboard, door panels, steering wheel, center console — and wipe with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn grime on textured plastic, use a soft-bristle brush to agitate before wiping.
Clean the glass inside and out with automotive glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth. Wipe in straight lines, not circles, to avoid streaks.
Step 4: Seats and Upholstery
For fabric seats: spray upholstery cleaner, scrub gently with a brush, and extract with a wet/dry vacuum or blot with towels. For leather seats: use a dedicated leather cleaner, wipe down, and follow with leather conditioner to prevent cracking and keep the material supple.
Step 5: The Final Touches
- Apply spray wax or sealant to the exterior for a protective shine
- Dress the tires with tire shine for that just-bought look
- Place a subtle air freshener inside (avoid overpowering scents — SWIFT renters appreciate a neutral, clean smell)
- Wipe down door jambs and the trunk seal — often-missed areas that reveal attention to detail
How Often Should You Clean?
For SWIFT hosts, a thorough clean between every booking is ideal. At minimum, do a full interior vacuum and wipe-down between guests, with a complete deep clean (including exterior) every 2–4 weeks depending on booking frequency.
For personal vehicles, a full deep clean once a month keeps your car in top condition and preserves its resale value.
A clean car earns better reviews, commands higher daily rates, and makes every trip more enjoyable. It's one of the simplest ways to stand out as a SWIFT host. Start hosting on SWIFT and put these skills to work.
